Oakland
A landscape restoration to help stabilize a problematic hillside.
In Oakland, a project confronted the formidable combination of expansive clay soils and a flawed original landscape installation. The residence faced significant issues, from failing entry stairs to overturned retaining walls and excessive impermeable surfaces. The clients sought an aesthetic transformation that also addressed these structural concerns. Preserving the root systems of two mature trees, a Deodar Cedar and a Cork Oak, became the project’s primary focus. Redesigned front entry stairs protected the Deodar Cedar’s roots, while pervious gravel replaced concrete surfaces to aid the struggling Cork Oak. A pier-supported retaining wall was constructed to stabilize the hillside and residence, and a comprehensive drainage system ensured water was diverted away from the foundations. The reimagined rear landscape, featuring improved circulation and a retrofitted staircase, transformed the space into a welcoming area for gatherings. This renovation has effectively shielded the residence from water infiltration during heavy rains, unlike neighboring properties.
