San Rafael

An ADA accessible landscape designed for a multigenerational family home.

Ensuring universal access to nature is essential, yet the landscape at this San Rafael residence initially failed to accommodate one of its homeowners. Elevational changes at door thresholds and materials unsuitable for wheelchair use hindered their ability to enjoy outdoor spaces. Addressing this, our project focused on creating accessible circulation pathways crucial for both everyday use and emergencies. The client also envisioned a lush, green oasis for relaxation and enjoyment. Sketch and Field meticulously managed pervious and impervious surfaces to craft ADA-compliant areas that harmonize with the natural surroundings. Lush grasses and drought-resistant plantings soften the stark rock walls and concrete pathways, while shaded gathering spots provide respite from the intense summer sun. The rear landscape’s water management system captures stormwater and channels it to dry wells in the front yard, enhanced with native, deer-resistant, and fire-resistant plantings.
